Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Company, which became Rapid Motor Company in 1902, before being brought under the GM umbrella by William C. Durant in 1909, then merged with Reliant Motor Company in 1911, thus forming the GMC marque we know of today.

That's all true, but it doesn't answer the original question: "GMC stands for what?" The fact is, GMC originally stood for General Motors Company, as the name for GM as a whole.

If Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Company had an acronym, wouldn't it be GMVC?
